GenCon Indy 2007, let's shake the male/female ratios--or not, they seem fine here ;)

Ahh yes. As inclusive as the Girl Scouts...

Are they allowing boys yet? :uhoh:

Do you know of a boy that wants to join Girl Scouts? I've taken my son to Girl Scout camps to play in the tagalong units and he had lots of fun. There are a lot of girls that are bailing on Girl Scouts because it's too girly girl, so they join the Venture Crew with Boy Scouts (but only after they're fully into puberty, that I don't quite understand) I've not heard of many boys talking about Boy Scouts being to manly for them. If they were, they would probably be laughed out. I guess that's one place women have the advantage. It's okay for girls to be girls and girls can also be Tom boys.

Why the need to segment women off from the rest of gamers? Women are gamers. Men are gamers. Do we really need to preface our involvement in the hobby with a gender? Does it make us extra special?

I guess I don't understand what you're looking for when you asked "what do female gamers want to see at the convention for them." Do women have separate gamer needs?

As for encouraging women to game at gencon, I think it's pretty safe to say that most of the women who attend gencon are already gamers. If you want to bring more women into the gaming flock, try somewhere where everyone isn't already a gamer.

Did anyone see anywhere at GenCon where you could buy a "H*ll hath no fury like a women's sword" shirt? I like that one too, and it's not quite as bold as the D20 shirt and would be something more women would want to wear and be recognized.

Well now you just seem to be picking among various stereotypes - this stereotype is unacceptable to you but another one is ok. This is starting to sound a little bit like you are out of touch with the community, if you don't mind me saying. Not intended to offend.

Totally agree. Maybe this reveals that I am part of the problem in Sephera's mind but I would have never have thought about women as "women gamers". Gamers are gamers.

I'm not sure what sexual identity has to do with anything...

I'm not a "woman gamer" or a "gamer girl". I'm a gamer. I'm not especially interested in seminars that treat me and my interest in the hobby as though I'm some strange and fascinating bug. And I'm not convinced that I automatically have things in common with other people, just because we have the same plumbing.

Amd this seminar right here?
SEM00168 - But What if the Player is Female? - 8/200
The people who thought that was a good idea, and the people who showed up for it, arouse my derision and disgust. What's next, "What if the player is Jewish?" or how about "What if the player is black?" Feh.

I DM regularly. I play regularly. I spend a heck of a lot of money on D20 books & accessories. Respect me for my love of the game, don't pat me on the head and thank me for coming. Again, my level of interest in or skill with this hobby has nothing to do with my plumbing. If GenCon were to try to make a big deal out of that plumbing, I wouldn't like it one bit.

Your stealing my schtick! :)

I haven't seen Dorkness Rising, but I heard that they make a really big deal that a woman joined the campaign? That seems to be gender biased to me. The SPA seminars for the "better half" encouraged women to go away from the gaming. I'm certain that somewhere out there is a female that dragged her reluctant male partner to GenCon. Where were his SPA seminars?

Wow. You havn't seen Dorkness Rising, but you're going to rag on it? Allow me to explain something. There is a gamer stereotype. Humor is often created based off of stereotypes. That is no reason to become offended, especially if you're assuming insult based off of secondary sources.

Secondly, I don't think they would have turned away any male who wanted to go to the spa seminar. Where are you getting that information?

Were they the only types of shirts available, though?

Heck no. I also bought one that says G*E*E*K. Last year, I bought my famous "I rolled a 20 so you b---hes can suck it!" and "Not only are you wrong, the rules say you're a D---k!" and "If I want your opinion, I'll read it from your entrails!"

There are hundreds of shirts available, for every taste and budget.
