Hey Felonius - I and my friends have done some last minute squeezing in terms of GEN CON before - it is not impossible - but not always comfortable. . .
Last year, I got a place on the floor of Orco42's hotel room ( which became a place in a bed when one of his friends did not show up) - and the year before that four friends of mine and I squeeze into a fancy schmancy hotel suite thing for two people and it worked out fine. . . We did not get that room until literally the a week before - it was expensive - but split 5 ways it worked out fine.
I did not receive a confirmation from the housing either, what I did to get one was: I logged into the Passkey system (the same place you signed up for housing) and went into change/modify reservation. I entered the acknowldegement number that I received when I registered. At the top of the page there is a button to press that says send confirmation. Once pressed this will send the confirmation sheet to guest 1's e-mail address.
Looks like we're staying in at the Hilton this year, yea!
Also, as Gargoyle said before, there are still studio suites available at the Residence Inn, Downtown Milwaukee. Their rooms are suites and they price out at $199/night for a studio suite that sleeps 4 with a fully equipped kitchen. There website is: http://www.residenceinn.com/dpp/PropertyPage.asp?MarshaCode=MKERI
I called the housing folks today, and they said not everyone received emails; they were fixing that today. And right on schedule, I got a confirmation mailed to me. Very polite, very efficient.

Just this afternoon I got a room for my wife 'n' I at the Mariott Courtyard Downtown, which is directly connected to the mall, which itself connects to the convention center.
I couldn't get it through the housing authority, I had to contact Mariott on my own, but I recommend it as a hotel. It's very nice, clean, good staff, and you never have to walk outside (i.e. break a sweat) if you don't want to.
They even have rooms with spas still available, if you want one....
