Generally Discouraged (In-Person Gaming)

Finding an in person group can be challenging these days. When I moved 12 years ago I didn't want to stop playing with my friends so I bought Fantasy Grounds and we have been playing that way ever since. I eventually found other people at work in my new city who played and ended up in a couple of in person games as well but once we all started working from home (we were going to start working from home anyway, COVID just accelerated it) those games moved online as well so I eventually bailed. Online isn't as much fun and my original gaming group of decades took priority. I'm hoping I can get a few members of my board game group to play an RPG in person.

He can join the Church and recuit players from that! Does anyone remember what that biblical 5E conversion was called??
I have Testament, which was produced during the 3.5 era.
Luckily, my attempts at excommunication were unsuccessful, so I guess I can always join a church. (A stunt included lifting sacred vestments from a priest and performing mock baptisms in the campus water fountain at my Catholic college.)

there's a 5e one, too. not that I've read either.

@Retreater You mentioned you were married; do you have kids? When I was a Boy Scout I was able to convince my scoutmaster to let us play D&D. Maybe indoctrinating the local scouts into gaming is an option? Mold those young brains.....

Having typed that it now sounds like a lot of effort.

Have you considered a small Retreater-Con.

Invite the players of one or more of your various online games to a long weekend of gaming. Do it over four days to make the travel worthwhile. People can sleep on the couch or in a tent, or a cheap hotel nearby. Play whatever games you want to run or anyone in the group want to run for the weekend.

This might scratch your itch for face to face gaming, and help build relationships with your online players.

I live four hours away from our monthly weekend f2f gaming group as I moved away with work, so it’s nice to turn that into a longer weekend and try out some new games. There are usually 5 of us that take part, one of which is @GuyBoy. We don’t do it every year, but often enough, and we’ve had some great memories. It kinda makes up for the fact that Gen Con isn’t easily commutable from England.

Ry-con 2022 should be happening in August. Can’t wait. We should be wrapping up a Ghosts of Saltmarsh campaign. Playing in my Odyssey of the Dragonlords Campaign. Doing a one shot into Undermountain and trying the rules for Cubicle 7’s Wrath and Glory in another one shot.

You and your wife may enjoy it?

The marriage is a more recent development, and no kids on the horizon.

That sounds like a great idea. I do see some of my online players occasionally (they live in the 1-3 hour range). My old college buddies and I try to get together a couple times a year for games and fellowship.
The other group would be trickier - since we're talking about places that have Meat Raffles. But that could be fun.
I am also trying to get to more conventions this year. I went to GaryCon and will be attending GenCon. I hope that helps too.
