D&D 5E Generating Player Characters

I've used every way described in the PHB to generate characters. At first I was partial to the standard starting ability scores over rolling but I used the point buy system for my last character and I am happy with the way it turned out. As a DM I have no issue with any of them in the PHB but insist if rolling for them that it is done at the table where all can see.

We switched to standard array only a couple campaigns ago because one of the DMs was kind of fed up with the high numbers that 4d6 (drop lowest) seemed to give.

I am quite happy with the method, too.

And to get the thrill of rolling dice at character creation, I randomly placed them when creating my gnome battlemaster, rolling 1d6 to decide which ability score got the 15, 1d5 to place the 14, 1d4 to place the 13, etc)'.

I was just reminded of the Rules Cyclopedia method. 3d6 in order. You could increase your prime requisite by 1 point as long as you reduced another by 2 and the ability reduced could not be charisma.

Our group does 4d6, drop the lowest and arrange as desired. If you don't like what you rolled, you can take the standard array. So it's one set of rolls and then take your choice of the rolled stats or the array. Give the group a chance at better than average but you don't have to worry about a character with incredibly low stats.

I play in a larger group. We sometimes have 8 or 9 people. So I've considered having everyone roll 4d6, drop lowest, one time. Then take six scores from what people rolled and making that the stat array for the group. You can take the six best or three high and three low, or any combo you like. Haven't tried it yet. I thought it may give the group a little bit of the excitement of random rolls but still keep everyone on an even playing field, stat wise.
