Then for a gestalt you combine features and when they overlap you take the best one correct?

So for a barbarian/X the class is literate since being literate is "better" than being illiterate. And this is not listed as a "restriction" so that rule about restrictions always applying doesn't come into play.

The Speak Language skill description pretty much says that it is a class feature and the implication from the barbarian's illiterate feature talks about other classes that can read.

So - my method still works ;)

Ah, no, you used the word "feature" and "class", but I didn't put it together that you meant the technical term "class feature".

No, literacy is a default for all PCs, not a feature of their classes, except as noted.

The general text (which you've seen under Speak Language) takes over when a class doesn't say anything more specific.

As always, specific trumps general, and explicit class features override implicit benefits.
