Getting a full set is unreasonable

WizKids has moved away from this model with their newly redesigned boosters and cases.

Also, they didn't "guarantee" the full set of minis in their old cases. That is a word that will always come back to haunt you.

Be that as it may, I saw ads in magazines proclaiming a factory set of some DC Heroclix expansion would get you at least 1 of every figure in the set. Granted this wasn't recently, but it proves the point that it certainly can be done.

I have a large collection of these things. What I do, is I repaint the ones I need to fit MY style. The Cult of the Dragon wizard became a Black-robed wizard with a blood-red staff. A Human Commoner lost the scythe, got a sword from a metal mini, and became my swordage PC.

I do hate the randomness. I used to play Magic, but I am so glad I quit. It's kind of sad the prices people will pay for a card. ($300 for a Black Lotus? It's a card! A CARD! And I don't care how much in-game power it has, $300 is just sick.)

For those of you saying that Reaper's prepainted minis line will give you exactly what WotC is offering at a similar or cheaper price, but without the randomisation, keep in mind that WotC releases 180 new minis each year.

Yes, some are resculpts of previously released creatures but that is still a lot of minis to come out with every year. I just can't see Reaper (or anyone else) having anything close to the range of minis that WotC put out. You do pay for that range I guess though.

Reaper has more in metal, and from what I gather, they can use this plastic process with the old metal molds. If the first offerings show promise, I assume they can release nearly every mini in their massive metal catalog in plastic (prepainted or not).

The only one I didn't like was the Royal Guard (especially since the polearm was bent).
Boil some water and dip the mini in for a few seconds. The plastic will soften and enable you to make minor adjustments like straightening weapons, correcting warped bases, and making the occasional limbo champion stand upright. It doesn't adversely affect the mini at all.

If right after you do this, you drop the mini in a cup of water with some ice cubes(ideally, one that's had a chance for the ice to cool things down), it'll retain its posture even better, and the water won't hurt your mini.

Reaper may have more in metal but I doubt that they are prepainted. For there to be a true comparison, the Reaper minis have to be prepainted. There are a lot of people out there that, for one reason or another are happy to buy prepainted minis but don't want unpainted ones.

Also, even if they can release nearly every mini in their metal catalogue in pre-painted plastic, I doubt that they actually will. I guess we will have to wait and see to find out.

My rant was related more to three cases and still no complete sets. There should be a limit.

The problem is that this is impossible, unless they decrease the set numbers (or increase case sizes beyond the old number of 16 boosters) so you can get everything within a single case. One case virtually guarantees you a balanced selection of figures (without duplicate rares), but if you buy more than one case, there's no way those cases can be "linked up" so they complement each other.

And I doubt that wizards will make it too easy to get a complete full set, since people would buy less stuff then: Right now, the best bet is to get 2-3 cases and then buy or trade for the missing rares. That means that someone else has to buy some boosters to be able to offer what you need. If you could get a "double-case" directly from WotC, with a full set in it, no one would have to buy any extra boosters to sell you those rares you're missing. Even if you buy a complete set, the guy who sells it will have to buy lots of boosters to be able to sell full sets.

The good news (This wasn't meant to be negative)
3 Shadow Drafgons
2 White
2 Gold (yeah got my mated pairs)
3 Dracotaurs (will eventually want 5-6)

I'll be happy to take one of those shadow dragons so you're not bothered by a triplicate mini :p

The two I am missing I should be able to collect easily enough in time, the Exarch of Tyranny and the Otyugh.

Neither is among the expensive figures in this set (many of which you did get twice or even thrice, so stop complaining! ;) :p ), so you should be able to get a good deal (with a couple of dracotaurs thrown in maybe).

You said WotC has more minis; they don't. I realize that Reaper is only offering a few prepainted.... for now. Comparing their line which isn't even on shelves yet to a prepainted line that's been out for over 5 years is disingenuous. If this first release is a hit, you can guarantee they will go back into their catalog and release more and more prepainted plastics from their massive catalog of metal minis.

Well I think one thing thing that will help Reaper, is that their pre-painted line is perfectly legal in their Warlord mini-game. So if it sells well they have incentive from both roleplayers and those who play their wargame to put out a variety of models. In the end only time will tell. I am personally willing to support the business model I prefer.
