In the prime material plane there are many worlds which have undergone drastic changes. The world of Athas, the Dark sun setting, was once a normal world and things went very wrong. This world is similar in so much as things used to be normal, but that changed. In this world things are different because the demons won.
The demons on this world had long been trying to kill and overthrow the gods and the method through which they did it was ingenious. They gave the mortal races all the power and immortality they could ever want. It was something like a disease, rushing through the mortal races. Prolonged exposure, contact, sex, all of these pass the gift of fire on. It spread across the world almost overnight.
Something it does to all races, save elves, is that it gives them immortality from death as well as an excellent resistance to disease. With this immortality and power they wiped the demons from the face of the earth, but at the same time what need had they for gods? Without the prayers of mortals the gods withered and died.
Some races got different gifts out if it than other. Orcs are now hulking beasts, more like Ogres than anything else. Rumour has it that halflings have telepathic powers. The Elves got perhaps the most powerful of gifts. Although they are stripped of their immortality, the elves have become powerful beyond even the new standards set by the gift of fire.
Humans though, their gift has changed the entire race. They’re no longer the short lived people they were, striving to exist and do good. They have all eternity to look forward too, and now they want to be masters of this world. They’ve already enslaved the halflings and almost wiped out gnomes.
That’s where you come in. Someone needs to put things right. It won’t be easy but there’s a resistance brewing, and it needs a few good men.

Okay, there's the blurb. For more info on the setting look here, but be warned that some of the info has changed: What to run...? Reloaded
There's two BIG posts there, one of which is on this setting. Any class, race or feat will be accepted from any book on the condition that a) it fits in with the setting (like human gods not existing) and b) it doesn't let you deal a billion damage per turn (like the Hulking Hurler build).
I know 8 -12+ people is a lot, but if I get more nine or more I'll run it as two groups which will both exist in the same world and might even run into each other. If one group does something, then the effects of it might be felt by the other group. Larks abound, except for the unlucky DM who has to run two groups running around in the same world. Ouch, but I should be up to it.
