Give Favored Soul turning ability: Yes or No?

Phaedrus

First Post
Someone suggested a while back on a thread I can't remember that Favored Soul is too weak and should have Turning added back in.

I like the idea, and not being a "balance savvy" kind of guy, wanted ya'lls opinion.

("Ya'll" is Texan for plural you, btw :) )

To weak?

Cleric BAB, All Good Saves, D8 HD, Light & Medium Armor and Shields, More Spells Known than a Sorcerer, weapon focus & specialization, 3 types of energy resistance 10, wings (fly 60, good), damage reduction 10/cold iron or 10/silver.

Giving them turning for free puts the sprinkles on the icing.

Compare them to the sorcerer who gets worse BAB, one good save, d4 HD (half the size), no armor or ability to cast in armor, less spells known, and a familiar.

The difference between arcane spells and divine spells shouldn't merit that massive of a difference.

But let's compare them to a cleric:

1 better save category
Less spells known but more per day
No heavy armor
No domain powers
No turning
3 Elemental Resistances
DR
Wings

Does that mean FS is stronger than Cleric?
I'm inclined to say yes. But as I already stated above, I'm a bit retarded on assessing balance.

Dont forget that Favored souls and Sorcerers gain new spell levels one level later than clerics/wizards do. Or that Clerics get Domain Powers, Domain Spell Lists, and a Domain spell slot.
Cleric is the closest class to check balance against, but you should check the balance at more than just level 20.

edit: i forgot about spontaneous heal casting

Favored soul, imho, is already significantly overpowered. I'm all for a divine spontaneous caster- hell, I'm all for making all divine casters spontaneous- but FS is ridiculous and isn't very generic. There are lots of gods that wings make no sense for (god of caverns, anyone?).

Of course the FS may seem weak compared to the cleric. Which class doesn't?

But I think the Favored Soul stands on its own. I wouldn't give it turning for free.

Rather, I would give it, at say, levels 8 and 16, one domain from her deity. She adds the domain's spells to her spell list, and get the domain granted power.

I'm with you on the wings. I really dislike that class feature and will be doing away with it.

I'm definitely pro-spontaneous magic. Sorcerers over wizards. FS over cleric... but I wanted Turning. I started with the Evangelist from Dragon, then looked at the variant in UA, then the FS. I'm not necessarily happy with any of them.

What are your thoughts on the DLCS Mystic? Better?

Quite. As I've already posted re: this concern and my hypothetical flexible 'solution' to it, I'll just say that yes, I agree.

Yeah, it's not like if typical D&D cavern dwellers, such as bats, dragons, and cloakers, have wings, is it? ;)
