A few possible ideas:
  • Automatically triggered but only on a crit.
  • Automatically triggered but only if another condition is in play (such as prone).
  • Max 1/round (to limit the amount of saving throws required).
Hmm...

When you make a successful grapple, you can also deal damage equal to your monk die.

this.

people need to stop over glorifying unarmed combat.

If it were that good, we would not invent weapons to replace it.
I meant from a rules perspective, the proposed mastery wouldn’t work as written. I’m fine with unarmed combat being a viable option for characters who specialize in it.

I agree this idea is out of place with our current system which is much more realistic, such as the heavy crossbows that can be reloaded in about 3 seconds, or the longbow that can kill a moving target in armor farther than Olympic archers shoot, or knives that can penetrate armor just as effectively as a war pick. In that context having an unarmed combatant able to do some free grappling is patently absurd.

Unarmed Strike isn't a weapon.

It takes more than a swappable mastery to mastery unarmed strikes.
It requires near mystical dedication or extreme discipline to make a fist match any blade. Even a dagger.

Fist and elbows can cut, definitely not as deep or extreme as a blade but they can definitely cut.

But the mastery noted here is not doing any of thst. There is no damage boosting here, it’s just letting people do damage and grapple more easily

How much does it take to punch and grab someone at the same time?

And your still only doing 1+Str damage without another feature. Less than a dagger.

My point was that unarmed Strikes should not be something you could practice and swap masteries as easily as a sword.
