Given that I like X, it's strange that I never play Y

I was recently playing a flash-based rpg, and noticed that once again I have a marked preference for a particular combination of mechanical abilities:
- high hit points
- good defenses
- strong attacks, ideally melee
- healing (for self and allies)
- buffing (for self and allies)

...and yet I've never ever played a paladin in any edition of D&D, either tabletop or videogame. Clerics have been rare as well - really, anything divine.

Does anybody else have a curious absence like that?

Is that a SP game? Maybe you are just optimising for the flash game, but in D&D you have other preferences.

But maybe, ya, you should try a paladin or cleric sometime since you are thinking about it.

I find that in video games I prefer the mage or range type characters more than I prefer running up to someone and hitting them with a big sword.

So my lack of wizard/sorcerer PCs has been odd. I've only done one of each, and the Wizard was dead before he hit 2nd level, so I didn't get much time with him.

As much as I love pouring over the spell descriptions of the game, it's odd I've only ever once played a wizard. Most of the other times I played some sort of fighter type.

Given that I like roleplaying games, it's strange that I never play WoW, DDO (or whatever they're calling it now) or any MMORPG. Okay, not really.

Given that I like melee combat in my RPGs, it's strange that I've never played one of the main melee classes, like fighter, paladin or barbarian. I almost always play support characters, like clerics. Right now, I'm playing a Monk. I'm not sure which that falls into.
