GLEE #24: Britney/Brittany

For those of you who were waiting for a Brittany solo, the wait is finally over. Our favorite ditzy Cheerio gets two numbers in tonight's episode which also introducies Emma's new boyfriend, who looks an awful lot like Uncle Jesse from Full House.

Unless otherwise stated, all of the songs in tonight's episode were originally performed by Britney Spears (who will actually appear in the episode).

"Baby One More Time" - Rachel
"Stronger" - Artie
"Me Against the Music" (w/Madonna) - Brittany and Santana
"I'm a Slave 4 U" - Brittany
Mr. Shu sings "Sailing", originally performed by Christopher Cross
"Toxic" - Mr. Shu and New Directions
"The Only Exception", originally performed by Paramore - Rachel

The last item raises two questions. Why is a Paramore song on an all-Britney Spears episode (I guess it is the only exception) and why is RACHEL singing it? When would Rachel listen to Paramore anyway? It's bad enough that Tina is underused on the show (she got to do one line of "Getting to Know You", thanks), they finally have a song that would fit her and they give it to freaking Rachel! Isn't "Baby One More Time" enough of a showcase (in more ways than one) for her? I lost a lot of respect for Rachel after last week's episode; hopefully she'll redeem herself soon.

Edit: They answered my questions about Paramore in the episode. It was nice to see Rachel (and Glee for that matter) back to her old self after the nastiness of last week's episode. Bonus: We find out Brittany's full name.

I don't get the "Brittany" reference?

"Britaney/Brittany" is the title of the episode. Brittany is a character on Glee. Since Britney and Brittany sound alike, I guess they thought it would be clever to give the character Brittany the spotlight in an all-Britney Spears episode.

Oh, but there's another episode title: "Rule, Brittania!" when Brittany becomes captain of the Cheeleading squad. It can be an episode themed on various patriotic songs.

Puck could sing something in Russian. It'd be cool!

They need to tone Jacob down about four notches.

And probably stop making Rachel look quite so sociopathic.

While the single-musician themed episodes have been musically strong, they've often been weak in other ways, what with them needing to wedge in popular songs even if they don't actually fit what's going on.

Thought the sequences too closely resembled Britney's videos to be interesting. I think the show is trying not to move the plot too much, just incrementally. Like the Madonna episode it fell back to how the songs from the star have empowered so-and-so, but there were some decently funny moments.

I don't watch this show regularly (the characters are a little too cartoony), but I recall the thorazine cheerleader saying her name was Brittany S. Peers.

Are there any actual teenagers in the cast? The Jewish kid seems to have a receding hairline (granted, those can happen in high school).
