GLEE #43: Funeral

Supposedly someone dies in today's episode. Of course they also said someone would die during regionals and that death would be a gamechanger, and it turned out to be the Warblers' bird. In possibly related news, we meet Becky's mother, who (understandably) is not happy with her daughter being in Cheerios. Here's hoping we'll finally see Sue's human side again, which has been AWOL in 2011.

The playlist:

Mercedes sings the version of "Try a Little Tenderness" originally performed by Otis Redding

Rachel sings "My Man", originally performed by Fanny Brice

Santana sings "Back to Black", originally performed by Amy Winehouse

Kurt sings "Some People", originally performed in Gypsy: A Musical Fable

The glee club sings "Pure Imagination", originally performed by Gene Wilder

Great episode, all the music was performed very well. Even the "Try a Little Tenderness" number which stylistically I didn't like, the performance was great. Sue finds her soul, who knew she had one? And the person we are supposed to be routing for, Mr. Shue, is being revealed more and more as a trusting moron who has a hard time differentiating between reality and fantasy when it comes to people's true intentions.

Now on a production note, why other than Sue's character development did they off Robin Trocki's character Jean? She along with Becky are two shining examples of mental disabled actresses who are expanding the realm of TV & Movies outside of the "Barbie" mold. Not since Geri Jewell has a positive on screen TV performance of a Down's Syndrome sufferer has had such a positive "normal" life participation effect. (Life Goes On doesn't count as Corky was often used as the hammer to drive home the awesomeness of his family's struggle with his illness, hardly a heroic character.) Here Becky and Jean showed the chink in Sue's armor as their positive personal character's showed a light into Sue's darkness. It's a shame they are removing her.

And is it me or is Jesse the new Sue?

He is certainly exhibiting some the same behavior. We'll have to see where it goes.

It is nice to see Sue's human side, though I wonder if it will last. Of course, if she changes we'll certainly lose out on some truly amazing sarcastic humor.

I'm also curious to see what Quinn has planned for New York.

Not a bad ep, but they shouldn't veer too hard on trying to make Sue go bad person/good person. Maybe next season there'll be a new principal or another villainous figures? But nasty Sue is definitely more fun to watch than nice Sue.

I have a nasty suspicion it's a dramatic "drama and song " bit that the audience/judges will think is a skit, but the Glee Club and Mr. Shue will know isn't part of the program....

I think you are likely right.

They certainly lead a new principal. Figgins is pretty useless.
