Gno more gnomes?

There's no official announcement as to the which one it is, but most people are betting on the gnome, since we don't really need two small races.

The WotC poster who mentioned hearing about the PHB, DMG, MM every year at a seminar also said that it was basically confirmed that it would be the gnome at the same seminar.

It's not quite 100% confirmed, but I think it's pretty certain at this point.

How the watered down kender that is the 3E halfling wins this contest boggles the mind. They'd have been better off merging both short races together, taking the best fluff from each, merging the pantheons and making the difference between a magical gnome and a less-magical halfling a matter of which 4E racial abilities are chosen for each character.

Not going to happen. There are too many things in their established campaigns where they are established. Eberron in particular has completely different, and strong, niches for halfings and gnomes.

So? Call the magical ones "gnomes" and the non-magical ones "halflings." It can be a cultural difference and they can stay equally well-established in their settings.

If the Forgotten Realms and other settings survived the de-hobbitization of halflings, they could survive this.

I always reckoned the 4E PHB should have a big and a small of four humanoid types: Humans/old-style halflings; elves/3E halflings; dwarves/gnomes; hobgoblins/goblins.

Heh... Oh, I hate the "wee folk" with a passion that will never die. Removing the gnomes from the core game is a serious, serious plus in my column. They could do away with Halflings while they're at it too. Hell, the only cool Halfling I've ever seen is... Belkar. And he's almost enough to redeem his whole race.
