Gno more gnomes?

You're.....aware that Half-Elves pretty much originated with Tolkien, right? And Half-Orcs too.....

And halflings aren't even like hobbits anymore.....
Well, I think he meant more the the Fellowship - one of each of the goodly races. Half elves are not a race, per se, and half orcs don't count - cause orcs are evil, as are most of their human parents.

Huzzzah! The Gnome menace is ended!

100000XP to the designers!

-- Okay, I don't really hate them. But they (and half-elves) were the tap water of the dnd races to me... I want to see something cool, something that does not skip in glades or tinker with clocks, bake cookies or merely fill a stat niche.

If I have to sacrifice gnomes for a year, so be it.

Challenge me 4e!

i have a player who i have never known to play a gnome say if gnomes arnt in the PHB then 4e is a no go with him. and knowing the player he isnt jokeing . its odd but theres some players that it just doesnt site well with takeing an icon out like that. like gnomes or not for a lot of players they are part of what makes d&d what it is ..myself i see them belonging more then half orcs even though i have played a few of em.

I have another anecdote relating to this, though opposite in nature.

I know one player that HATES change. I won't go into what he did re: 3.5. Anyway, I could hear the static electricity firing off his short hairs when I mentioned 4e.

Then I told him no gnomes in the PHB.

Damn, if he wasn't sold on 4e in a second.

Weird.

(If someone asks, I think I know why. It involved a cat-piss man.)

Should I point out that gnomes not being in the PHB is still speculation? I'm thinking I should...

It might be right. I'm not saying its wrong. But, it has not been confirmed.

I was a bit upset until I heard about the plans for yearly Player's Handbooks. If the gnome is being saved until PHII, that may portent the Eberron take on them will become core. "Seekers of knowledge, keepers of secrets"; simple, elegant, and rooted in the real life folklore of the race. The minstrel show monstrosity from the 3e core books won't be missed.

Not that I'm a huge fan of gnomes, but tieflings? They may as well throw in drow as a core race while they're at it.

If you dig on this forum hard enough, you might find an old statement by Andy Collins suggesting something to that effect.

Yeah, not my D&D.

I'm a fan of the wee folk, including Gnomes, but I recognize my interest probably isn't mainstream within the hobby.

It's actually just the opposite. Almost everyone feels strongly about gnomes. Love or Hate, you have an opinion.

As opposed to dwarves. No one cares if they're around, hardly anyone plays them, but "they've always been there". Elves and Humans at least get played, and I've seen a halfling here and there (though, I wouldn't call them Kender, so much as just thieves...).

I think a feat system could replace the halves, which would also broaden it so you could have a half-fey dwarf or whatnot, rather than just humans that have sex with anything. (well, them and dragons.)

Just goes to show how different people's experiences are. I've seen lots of dwarves, and I know lots of people who like them. In fact, I think I've seen more dwarves as PCs than elves in the 3E era.

Gnomes are a love / hate race and I think they can add a lot of flavor to campaigns. I would get rid of all the half races before removing other iconic ones and just make a half race feat/ability for those who like to double dip their races like Vocenoctum said earlier.

Save the Gnomes! :D

That exactly why I would love to see gnomes rolled over into 4th Edition, it's the perfect time for them to give gnomes a makeover and give them more depth than they've had in previous editions.
