God Oath

If a character promises to carry out an act and says by not doing so he will be denouncing his god, what happens if he does not commit the act? The situation would be a good character promising to commit an evil act in order to not be killed by his captor. The denouncing part would be insisted upon by the captor to ensure the act is carried out once he lets the character go.

It depends on three things:
First and foremost: In your campaign, does an oath made under duress count as an oath?
Second: What is the PC's class. A Paladin is up the creek without a paddle either way. He should have died.
Third: How active are the gods in this world? In my campaign world (a homebrew) the gods take part in it as if it was the TV show Hercules: The Legendary Journeys, or Xena: Warrior Princess. You make an oath, and break it, you can bet that god will remember it.
A little more info, and I'll help you as best as possible.

I'm still sorting it out. But, I would not have the gods directly act. They would send agents. The PCs classes are cleric, divine champion and ranger. It's really a psycheout to get them to uphold the promise if they make it.
