Finally saw it. (Came out this week on DVD and Netflix just sent it to me.)
I had seen two of the director's previous movies, Versus and Sky High, and really liked them both. Versus was sort of a crazy-frentic zombie movie, while Sky High was a fairly slow and philosophical movie.
I wasn't sure what to expect.
But it turned out to be crazy like Versus. Really crazy.
Pretty good, though. Did a good job of staying true to past Godzilla movies, besides the various monsters, having the aliens from Planet X.
Definitely not the typical Godzilla movie (or Kaiju movie in general). Most of the monster fights were very brief, with Godzilla plowing through them.
Not as much Mothra as I would have liked, but she did have a pretty decent fight.
Also weird that apparently Keith Emerson did the music for the movie (but under a Japanese name). Though this isn't obvious until the song over the credits (which has the ELP style synth)
I dunno if I'll buy it or not, but definitely worth watching. Parts also reminded me a lot of X-com.
On the down side, parts of it seemed dated. The matrix style effects/shots. Ugh. That got old in the 2nd Matrix movie. And the characterization wasn't great. Sky High had a huge cast, but most of the characters in that were well developed. (But then again, this is a Godzilla movie)
