Godzilla: Final Wars...

Finally saw it. (Came out this week on DVD and Netflix just sent it to me.)

I had seen two of the director's previous movies, Versus and Sky High, and really liked them both. Versus was sort of a crazy-frentic zombie movie, while Sky High was a fairly slow and philosophical movie.

I wasn't sure what to expect.

But it turned out to be crazy like Versus. Really crazy.

Pretty good, though. Did a good job of staying true to past Godzilla movies, besides the various monsters, having the aliens from Planet X.

Definitely not the typical Godzilla movie (or Kaiju movie in general). Most of the monster fights were very brief, with Godzilla plowing through them.

Not as much Mothra as I would have liked, but she did have a pretty decent fight.

Also weird that apparently Keith Emerson did the music for the movie (but under a Japanese name). Though this isn't obvious until the song over the credits (which has the ELP style synth)

I dunno if I'll buy it or not, but definitely worth watching. Parts also reminded me a lot of X-com.

On the down side, parts of it seemed dated. The matrix style effects/shots. Ugh. That got old in the 2nd Matrix movie. And the characterization wasn't great. Sky High had a huge cast, but most of the characters in that were well developed. (But then again, this is a Godzilla movie)

I love this movie. It's just so over the top and just plain fun. Captain Gordon rocks! I just wish the DVD cover of the US release didn't look like crap. The Japanese one was way better.

Indeed, I really enjoyed this movie. Very over the top and a little goofy in ways, but it had alot of the fun of older Godzilla movies. The use of the Godzilla from the american release (called simply Zilla) was pretty amusing. Captain Gordon was former UFC Champ Don Frye and a couple of other MMA fighters make cameos as the grunts down at the south pole. Not a great movie at all, but a very good Godzilla movie.

I thought the monsters did not look as good as they could have been. Though I loved the new Gigan!

Yeah, it seems only the featured monsters got a lot of attention - some of the lesser ones were CGI (slightly better than Sci-Fi channel movie CGI, but not great).

Actually, I'm pretty sure that only Zilla was CGI.

..and that was probably on purpose to make him stick out. I loved this corny movie. Yeah, I liked Don Frye as Captain Gordon. The other 2nd Gigan (with Chain Saw hands) was fun too. So how does this tie in with the previous newer incarnation movies though? I do believe the older Godzilla had died in one of them and "baby" Godazilla from the earlier set of movies had become the new one. So, does that mean there's a new Godazilla born every few decades? Am I overthinking this? :)

All in all it was fun for me and I'd buy it (when it turns cheap to buy that is)

There are multiple Godzilla continuities, so you can't tie all the movies together.

Yeah, the big guy was disintegrated at the end of the very first movie. But he knows how to make a comeback!

I was a bit apprehensive about this film since it got mixed reviews, even on Godzilla-specific sites. Even the best ones tended toward, "It's not as bad as everyone says" type reviews. However, I will say that I was pleasantly surprised. The story was good for a Godzilla film and the effects were generally well done (Rodan's first appearance rocked).

Some people argue that it's too silly. I'd say that the problem is that the current Godzilla films are too serious. They all want to be like the first one. This is really a throwback to the fun 60's-70's Godzilla films.

Other people say that the monsters don't get enough screentime. I will agree with this. OTOH, the human stuff was actually entertaining. That's something we haven't really seen since they had people fighting aliens back in the old films.

On the negative side, the fights were too short. I understand Godzilla taking out the scrub monsters in a few seconds, but
Hedorah (the Smog Monster), Rodan, Angillas, and King Seesar? C'mon, everyone knows Rodan would totally kick Godzilla's ass!

Lastly, I think someone should pass a law requiring the Captain Gordon character to appear in all future films. I'm not just talking about Godzilla movies, I mean all films! :D
