IDW Games is launching a roleplaying game based on its line of Godzilla comics. Godzilla; The Roleplaying Game is designed by Jervis Johnson. Mark A. Latham, and Gav Thorpe. It's a bit unclear whether players will be playing as iconic Toho kaiju or as people trying to halt kaiju in their tracks. However, the game system will use a standard deck of cards rather than dice to determine checks.

Previews for the new game will be at PAX Unplugged, so we can expect to get more information later this month. A Kickstarter will launch in March 2026 to support the new game, with fulfillment to follow later that year.

Notably, this is the first new game published by IDW Games in five years, and the company (which is tied to the IDW comics publisher) has plans to launch other licensed games in the near future.

As a longtime Godzilla fan who’s run one-shots with various game engines before (from HERO to Pulp Cthulhu) I’m very interested to see what they cook up. It seems to have a focus on playing human defenders, but I wonder if it allows for PC-controlled Kaiju ala Destroy All Monsters?

It looks like the game will use normal playing cards as its core mechanic, which I’m not so sure about, but maybe it’s because Godzilla Does Not Play Dice?
