I'm not a movie person, so I rarely go to see them. I never go do movies alone. If I can't find anyone to go with me, I'll just wait for it on DVD.

Even if you go with friends, you're paying to watch people pretend to be characters they're not, playing out a story that isn't true, reading out lines that were written for them by someone else, and actually getting entertained by that. You're in a whole other category of weird already, and that's even without playing D&D and posting on a D&D messageboard.

I'm just saying ;)

Well I knew that....;)

What if you're seeing a documentary? :p
That's even worse... then you're watching ostensibly real people/events that have been converted into fiction through the magic of film making...

I prefer not to see movies alone. It's a cultural thing, I grew up in New Jersey.

Beat me to it.

Damn! In that case, I'm impressed you even go out of the house alone!

Never gone to a movie alone and I don't really want to.

Movies are a sorta social experience where I can hang out with friends on non-D&D nights (or with friends that don't play D&D), get a beer and some food afterwards, and talk about the movie. If it's something I really wanna see... then I rent it.

I prefer to go with at least one other person if I can -- movies are a communal experience, first and foremost, and really used to be from their beginning. However, if it's a cool movie I can't wait to see, I'll jump in alone if no one's going. After all, even beyond the experience of sharing it with friends, there's sharing it with the rest of the audience, which can still be a rewarding experience.

I think may be why I really have started to hate going to the movies. People chit chatting with their friends or trying to be funny with annoying comments (oft times shouted to the whole theater) just drive me nuts.
The most boring kind of movie, of course, is going to see one with NOBODY in the theater -- when that happens, it kind of sucks some of the fun out, but I'll do it if I really want to see the movie.

 that would be my idea of heaven. Watching a (good) movie without a soul around me. *bliss*

When I was single, and in the Bay Area, I lived about a five minute drive away from a very good multiplex. I went alone all the time. I could see what I wanted, when I wanted, if I just felt like it today. Or now. I could catch a second one in the same day if I wanted. I'd still get together with friends to see movies, but we were kinda spread out, so it took a little planning. Whereas alone, I could see what's playing today, pick one, and go.

Now, my girlfriend and I both have weekends free, and there's generally something we both want to see. So we'll go together.

Oh, and when I was in high school, I went to go see Amadeus by myself. I think I was the only person under 30 in the theater. I was amused.

I've never gone to a movie alone. But I've never NOT gone to a movie because I didn't have someone to go with. I've got a large circle of friends and a husband. So, if I want to go to a movie (which is relatively often), I've always got someone to go with.

That said, I don't think I would be uncomfortable seeing one alone. At least, not now that I live in the city. In my hometown in South Dakota it might be a little odd because it's incredibly likely that I'll know at least 20% of the people in the theatre...
