I think rogue 10/fighter 10 is just fine, actually. It may not have a strong focus, but can do all the basic scouting functions, can sneak attack for +5d6, and lots and lots of feats (all the better to sneak attack you with).
A more purist approach would be fighter 1/rogue 18/duellist 1, giving you martial weapon proficiencies and boosting our Fort save, while loading up on the sneak attack dice and rogue special abilities.
As for prestige classes... it really depends on what you are going for! Fighter 3/Rogue 3/Catlord with Improved Initiative can charge and make two attacks, and if he wins initiative, both get sneak attack dice. On the other hand, the Thief-Acrobat is supreme for skill use and battlefield mobility.
Sniper? Fighter/rogue/order of the bow initiate.
