Good movies that have bad DVDs?

Hmmmm. I've run into those DVDs with the unskippable trailers/previews, but they were always rental/library copies. I always thought they made them that way specially for them.

Well, rental copies can make their way into normal home viewing channels. Most video stores I know that buy lots of copies of a popular movie when it comes out, sell those used DVD's off for cheap once the rush has passed. With stores that buy and sell used DVD's, they can even be bought and resold to people who didn't know they were originally rentals.

That and some may just make them with the ads in there. From what I hear, Disney's DVD's at least used to be notorious for unskippable commercials. Or just like you get poor-quality DVD's like the ones that don't even have a menu, where they just decide to put commercials in, because you won't know they are there until you have already bought the DVD and if you want to watch their movie, you have to do it how they say, and if you don't like it, the DMCA says "Tough".

This harkens back to what I mentioned in a pevious thread.

Throwing a movie unto a DVD is exceptionally easy. Sometimes, especially with older movies where you DONT already have a digital copy, all you have to go on is the orginal master copy, which degrades over time.

For all these movies, they arent gonna be multi-million dollar sellers. They'll make a few thousand tops.
Why would any studio pay good money to re-master a film for dvd transfer, and end up losing money in the long run?

The Hot Shots!/Hot Shots! Part Deux double feature set has several scenes cut.

Most notably each movie's big joke sex scene.

It baffles me. Must be some kind of a TV cut or something, though it doesn't say on the box.

What exactly was cut? I don't recall missing anything when watching them on DVD.

Hmmm, of the ones I own I think Panic Room is the worst. It is a Superbit transfer, and looks fantastic, but otherwise it has nothing on it. I found it to be pretty decent and was disappointed at the lack of bonus content. Especially when you compare them to the more than excellent treatments that Se7en and Fight Club received.

I take it you have the UK Region DVDs? Apparently those do have edits like what you mentioned. Those edits aren't in the US DVD they have the whole movie. You might want to invest in a region free DVD player and pick up the US editions.

Thinking about what a previous poster said about long DVD cutscenes before actually getting to start the movie I would like to add the Firefly complete series. You have to go to 3 screens or so just to get to the play this episode and there is another screen in between that and playing. I thought it was a tedious process.

For other reasons, like not having a good commentary or missing things I would say Spaceballs. The copy I have has no extra scenes, no commentary, nothing. For that matter I wish they had some of the now famous cut scenes in the Star Wars trilogy. I really thought we would see more of Biggs Darklighter with the ANH DVD but we didn't. I understand Lucas' reasoning for not wanting to put them in the movie as well as the production companies reason to want to see the hero earlier in the first film but that was 25 years ago and the film is so famous and important to people that everyone just wants to see anything they can about it whether it would have ruined the film or not.

In a mild hijack the Cruel Intentions DVD has scenes that were cut that I felt changed the entire movie. It is a good example of why I love DVDs. Seeing what once was can sometimes help you appreciate a movie much more than you did. I also sometimes like to listen to director commentaries as well. It is usually an interesting look at how or why something occured.

I'd really like to see a deluxe DVD version of the 13th Warrior complete with some of the scenes that were cut from the theatrical version.

I am still P.O.ed the marketing dweebs switched the movie title. "The Eaters of the Dead" is a delicious title in my hungry opinion.
