Disney?

High Grant??

Jim Carrey???

Cameran DIaz???????????

None of these people should have anything to do with HHGTTG. This is shaping up to be a travesty of the highest order...

Call me a heretic if you will, but leaving aside the issue of Carrey and Diaz not being British, I actually see how those casting choices could work.

Remember, once upon a time we could have been sayin Elijah Wood should have naught to do with Frodo, either. This is the same things people were saying before LOTR came out, so judge not till the film is released.

The only problem I'd see is getting the film to a manageable length AND leaving in all the good bits. Wonder if it'll cover the same Hitchhiker/Restaurant ground as the BBC version, or strictly Hitchhiker.

Hey, if Adams wanted Hugh Grant, who am I to complain? Wait, Lucas wanted Greedo to shoot first. Who are creators to determine what they create?

I wonder if they'll get Diaz to fake an English accent? Shouldn't be too hard... look at Xena. Her accent was utterly fake, Lawless normally talks just like a normal Kiwi. I didn't hear anyone complaining.

But Jim Carrey as Zaphod? I'm actually looking forward to that. The man's just crazy enough to make it work. The guy they had on the original TV series was OK, but he didn't show the glimmers of brilliance that occasionally permeate Zaphod's skulls. Carrey could do that perfectly, and hold a conversation with himself to boot.

And the effects might be a little better than the miniseries... Marvin can only get better. (I'll be pedantic here and state that 'extremely futuristic' is very definitely something Adams would have wanted; no grimepunk spaceships, no big girders holding things together - it's in Life that the Trial of Krikkit is held billions of years ago in a then-hypermodern concrete and steel room. The implication is very strong that what we think of as cool and modern today is not cool and modern in the galaxy.)

I'd be fine with Grant as Arthur; he's a guy I really can believe never got the hang of Thursdays.

Carrey as Zaphod I have doubts about. He can do the zany, but I don't think he has teh sexy required to maximize the character on-screen. Laugh if you will - but the guy didn't become President of the Galaxy on his brains alone! There's got to be some charisma there.

(I was lucky enough to be able to do the Hitchhiker's radio shows at my college radio station nearly ten years ago. I played Zaphod - and my friend Cory was a perfect Dent, without a lick of acting experience, but could do befuddled really well. That semester was most fun I've ever had in a radio booth. Well, except for a couple of times when I ... but that's a subject for NKL, not here. :) )

See, now I see Hugh Grant as being perfect for Ford Prefect. For Aurthur Dent, well .... What about the guy who played the lead in "28 Days Later"?
