Grappling a Mount?

If a mounted character's mount it grappled, does that mean the rider is in a grapple as well?

It would seem to make sense (since the mount and rider share a space), but it has significant effects during grapples. For example, does the rider have a random chance of striking his own mount if it's in a grapple and the rider's not? Is the rider not threatened by any of the attacking grapplers that are basically all over the rider's mount? Do outside combatants not have a chance of hitting the rider if the rider is not in the grapple? Which would be kind of weird of there are three mountain lions in a grapple with a griffon and the griffon rider has no chance of accidentally being shot by a missle weapon fired into the grapple.

I would interpret this as the grapple is between the mount and the opponent, leaving the rider 'squeezed' but not part of the grapple.

You only have a random chance of striking grappled characters if using ranged weapons.

I would extend this to include the all the characters in the square even if they are not 'grappled'..this way you would have a chance to strike the rider of said griffon.

No. But whether or not you can grapple a mount without its current rider is not clear from the rules. One interesting thing to note is that the Mounted Combat feat does not specify the type of AC it grants, so technically it is the best type possible (i.e. touch or incorporeal touch).

My assumption from this question is that you allow the mount to be grappling and the rider not to be grappling. I wouldn't say that's possible because it creates for conflicts in the rules with regards to mounts taking actions. But, if you allow it, then you must treat it like any other grapple. The rider has the random chance but only on ranged weapons (of course, which I presume you realized).

That would be correct (if you allowed it). The rider, however, still threatens all the areas around him (and his own Space).

Nope (if you allow it). This is another wonky part. If the rider has Mounted Combat, he would be able to use it on any attack from outside the grapple that might hit his mount. I'm not sure if you'd also rule that feat to affect the grapple itself.
