D&D 5E Grappling and gfb/bb

Most BB users pick up warcaster so it's probably a none issue even if your table tries to follow the juggling rules for hand economy.

Prone/grapple won't trigger the rider from BB but it doubles down on the punishment for trying to move away.

It pretty much boils down to:

Does this spell have an S component [and not also an M component that you are currently holding] and if so, do you have a free hand?

War caster only obviates the S component, so if you have your hands full and the spell has a M component (that doesnt happen to be one of the things you're holding in your hands) it doesnt help you.

Shield (for example) which has V and S components, cant be cast with your hands full, even if one of the things you are holding is a Spell focus (like a shield emblazoned with your holy symbol or a staff), because it doesn't have an M component (so you cant sub a hand holding one for the S component). It works fine with Warcaster though.
Indeed. Does anyone find keeping track of this stuff fun? Is it neccessary for game balance?

I have rarely seen anyone keep close track of it actually.

I think if folks did, it might help. At least in white room analysis of combos and
Maneuvers it seems to be disregarded.

I don’t think it really does anything to wizards who are single classed.

I don't know about it being necessary for game balance, but for me anyway it is necessary for verisimilitude, which for my imagination helps make the story of the game feel more real, more engaging, and thus more fun.

But, in AD&D days I made players actually track their uses for spell components, and they had to state in game when they were searching for/ harvesting/ buying replacement components, just as they would replacing rations and other equipment. 🤷‍♂️

For more, you can see my thread about D&D not being a simulation game...

Equally unpopular but equally important to my group: arrows!

There is a lot said about how overpowered sharpshooter and bows can be…

I don’t want to nerf people per se but ignoring general stuff isn’t for me either…not totally anyway.

we always paid more attention to costly spell components…we usually assumed wizards could find crickets legs and such.
Either with this hand management stuff or components, I don’t want our adventure to stop all of the time, but acknowledging it adds a sense of lawfulness and detail to the pretend…

V, M to S, M is actually a buff since the M is a weapon, and you can use the same hand for both M and S.

You don't have to say the V anymore, which helps in stealth situations or zones of silence.

Changing the range did hurt niche spell sniper reach weapon builds, though.

See, here’s a perfect use for the arcana skill. Cleric, while grappling the monster with one hand and a weapon in the other needs to cast a spell that requires hand gestures. Maybe with some effort and using their knowledge of the spell the cleric can cast it if a DC 15 arcana check is passed.

But the rules explicitly state that these spells can be cast with the weapon holding hand
