Alvin and a Beastman are grappling. Calvin, who is not part of the grapple, wants to hit the Beastman but worries about maybe hitting Alvin. As far as I can tell, in 3.5 missle weapon attacks have a chance of hitting Alvin, but meelee weapon attacks can be directed at the Beastman without a chance of accidentally hitting Alvin.

Am I right?

Later, Calvin joins the grapple. Now can Calvin grapple to attack the Beastman without a chance of hitting Alvin?

there's no issue with hitting your target in a grapple (taking part in it or not) with a melee attack.

it might actually become easier as all participants of a grapple are considered taking up the same space on the grid as the largest participant of the grapple. any position that can attack any of those squares would be valid to attack any of the grapple participants.
