Great Cleave or Whirlwind Attack vs. Mirror Image

But if you accept the Sage's ruling, you can Cleave off a Mirror Image.

Like most sane people, I don't accept Sage replies before they show up in the FAQ. I don't think this one made it !!

According to the Sage quote above, you can, because a "creature-simulating effect" qualifies as a "foe".

"Foe" or "opponent" is used in the WWA description, and I agree with that.

But cleave demands "a creature" and spell effects aren't creatures by definition.

The question to the Sage was "Can a creature-simulating effect trigger a Cleave", and the answer was "Yes".

As I've said, I disagree in this case, but for those who follow Sage rulings, he allows Cleaves off creature-simulating effects.

Sayyy...

What about a Fighter with WWA, Great Cleave, and a Ring of Spell Storing containing Mirror Image?

He casts Mirror Image on himself, and then uses the Bucket o' Snails trick by Whirlwinding his own Mirror Images and Cleaving into the BBEG.

Since every figment must be within 5' of the caster or one other figment, every time he destroys one, the others must fill the gap... so there's always one within 5' of him until they're all gone.

Obviously you'd have to Maximize or multiply-Empower the spell to have it be any good... since on average a CL3 Mirror Image yields only 3.5 figments...

Fortunately, this bit of silliness is going away soon.

Methinks I hear a creaking of a strained NDA... :)

Are they disallowing Cleave off a WWA? Or restricting the allowable targets of a Cleave/Great Cleave?

I don't have a copy of the new rules myself, but I assist someone who does, and I have signed an NDA.

As long as I'm not too specific, I don't get in trouble. :)

Correction - you don't get in legal trouble.

Keep teasing, and I'm sure someone will track you down... probably someone with a Bucket o' Snails and a baseball bat... :)

I would imagine that that particular bit of silliness (WWAing and cleaving your own mirror images) never existed in the first place. WWA requires a foe and while mirror image may create a creature like effect, if it's an image of yourself, it's definitely not a foe.
