Great Cleave or Whirlwind Attack vs. Mirror Image

It might not be a foe before you take a swing at it, but I'll bet getting stabbed in the back by the guy who conjured it will hurt its feelings!

Seriously, though - aren't "ally", "foe", "opponent", and "enemy" purely subjective terms?

If Clem the Cleric casts a Bless spell, it affects all his allies within 50'. Now, if Fred the Fighter has secretly been replaced by an evil doppelganger, but Clem doesn't know, shouldn't the doppelganger get the benefits of the Bless?

If Wally the Wizard is having a friendly dagger-throwing contest with Robby the Rogue, and Clem has bet on Robby, can't he cast a Bane spell that affects Wally, and a Bless spell that affects only Robby? Wally's an enemy because Clem's decided he's an enemy... even though they're good friends.

The terms "foe" and "ally", and their plural counterparts, are not defined by the rules at any point. Presumably, both terms are actually identical, and signify "victims the effect creator selects". The term "foe" and "ally" are used simply to indicate for the thick-skulled which general group of victims should probably be chosen from.

Cleaving onto or from illusionary monsters certainly makes sense, providing that the cleaver believes them to be monsters at the time of cleaving.

The rules, unfortunately, seem very vague about this.

Unless the reply is in your favor, of course. :p

Doesn't matter to me, K !!!

I usually disregards all Sage responses until they show up in the FAQ, regardless of whether they support my view or not.
