If you use CR rather than hit dice you get some pretty cool Elementals.

Which just reflects a problem with the calling spells and the Polymorph spells.

This kind of power should be depend on the power of the creature transformed/called (ECL) and not dependant on the HD of the creature.

There is a bit more flexibility in the rules than what you seem to be using here.

I know this. I can use the one-step rule that exists for cleric alignment. But I'm coming from:

Roleplay-wise I prefer more focus on the cleric's faith and on the single monster rather than its type.

NG all celestials.
LG all celestials except Eladrin. Inevitables.
CG all celestials except Archon. Slaadi.

NE all demons, devils, and yugoloths.
LE all devils and Yugoloths. Inevitables.
CE all demons and Yugoloths. Slaadi.

N anything (adjust for flavor though)
LN Inevitables, Devils, Angels.
CN Slaadi, Demons, Eladrin.

* Everybody can summon Elementals.

** Negotiation price is normal for Allies of the same alignment of deity. Negotiation cost for Allies one step away from deity alignment is 50% higher. Elementals are not bound by this cost restraint.

NOTE: by the way, are the Slaadi good enough as Planar allies? are there any other CN outsiders? Also, the Slaadi isn't on the SRD, and IDHTBIFOM, so what kind of Slaadi could a 16th level cleric with the Chaos Domain (+1 to chaotic spells) call?

OK I'll bite...whats an Inevitable? what book?
They're in the 3.5e MM. Extraplanar constructs whose job it is to seek out and punish oathbreakers, those who would escape death, and those who would escape justice (there are three different kinds).

I used a CR cap combined with the stated hit dice cap, eg 8th level Greater Planar Ally spell has CR cap 15.

Actually it's interesting to consider if the planar ally spells would even summon an Inevitable. For starters, they're constructs rather than outsiders, and only nominally native to mechanus because the first of them was built there (by the deity Rudra). And even if you let them be called and bound with the spell, what if one of them assumed that you broke some sort of rule by summoning it and others showed up to free it? *chuckle*

As for that Slaadi question: Death Slaadi and maybe a powerful Gray Slaadi.

A 7th level red slaad barbarian? A 4th level green slaad sorcerer? A blue slaad wearing magical full plate, belt of giant's strength, bracelet of health, amulet of mighty fists and boots of speed?

I guess technically you're right. But formians are boring, and inevitables are exactly what I think you'd get from a LN deity. Tough part: writing down an iron clad contract that won't come back to bite you in the a**. :D

Aren't the Death Slaadi CE (never understood that myself...).

Maybe using a templated Gray slad? (i.e Feral :] )

I'm having a slow brain day. :o

Could you elaborate this rule. Can you exceed the Hit Dice cap?

First time I'm getting into Lev 12+ so I'm running into these quandaries (sp?) :o

As I have it written currently you use the lower of either the hd cap or the CR cap, but the hit dice cap is less important for planar ally spells; it's the Solars & Planetars that are unbalancing. You might want to just switch to a straight CR cap, eg Spell Level x2 -1 or -3; or caster's level - 2.

Caster Level -2. To a max of CR 20. thanx
