Green Lantern: Rebirth #1

Picked it up yesterday, and after reading the train-wreck that was GL #181, all I can say is *WOW*. I knew going in that this is series is a reset for Hal Jordan (FINALLY), but it looks like Geoff Johns is pressing the reset button for the whole GL universe.

The high points:

The Abin Sur-like entrance of Kyle Rayner in the beginning was a nice touch, but the big suprise for me was Guy Gardner's body rejecting his Vuldarian "implants". The whole Warrior thing was a little stupid IMO, and hopefully this means Guy will go back to being just "Guy" (or dare I say - a GL)and not "Warrior" (although I kinda like the bar).

The John Stewart/Batman scene was good too - "What's the Batman if you're not afraid of him? A MAN." great line. I'm left wondering what they'll do with "Coast City" though. It's a cool that Hal's apartment building is currently the only building in the city - but I think I might be a little much to bring back the whole city like nothing happened.

Yes it does...but I will hold back in given any total judgement, until the second or third issue.

Nothing personal against Hal, but in the last pages, that scene done smacked of his old ways...(the god like way) that didn't sit well with me. And not a promising opening either. (Okay...a view, not a judgement yet..;) )

I'm don't follow comics that actively anymore, but I was very disappointed when I heard about this. Actually killing off Hal Jordan in the wake of Doomsday was one of the things that converted me from a Marvel reader to a DC reader. Oh well, I guess you can't please everyone.

as much as i hate the return of Hal, this issue was amazing and about as well done as it could be. Geoff Johns is the master at brining together old characters and plot points with new modern sensibilities.

the john stewart/batman exchange was BRILLIANT.

but i read confusing news yesterday...mere moments after I whined that Johns is so good and then Byrne is gonna wind up writing the new GL book, I read an article in Wizard 156 that said the new GL series is going to be written by Johns with art by Pacheco.

Whats going on? Can anyone who hasnt been reading their comics second hand and has actually been to a comics store shed some light on this?

Oh God, please don't let it be John Byrne. Anyone but Byrne. A GL monthly penned by Geoff Johns would definitely be on my must buy list list though.

He sometimes goes too far with this and often overdoes it, but he's good at
it, no doubt about it. He's to the DCU what Kurt Busiek is to the 616 Marvel
Universe.

Everyone has been thinking it for years, time for someone to say it.

This was nothing but a very short-lived rumour, long before the Rebirth series
and the Return of Hal Jordan was officially announced. Byrne had said he was
working on a new DCU 'restart'-type project (which turned out to be Doom
Patrol) and the rumour-mill had it all but confirmed that DC was bringing Hal
back, so people put 2+2 together and got 5.

To be exact, rotating teams of Pacheco and Van Sciver, it seems.
