Green Ronin and 4E

I’m curious whether you’ve talked to Wizards about licenses specific to the products you’d like to do. (While the GSL is out there for anybody to use, that doesn’t preclude negotiating a separate license.)

Although I think it’s probably just as well if GR doesn’t bother with 4e products.

Any chance of Pathfinder support? Since the old Advanced Races and Advanced Classes never made it out under the old 3.5, Pathfinder versions would be the next best thing.

Some of them did. I know that Advanced Race Codex: Drow and Advanced Race Codex: Halfling were 3.5E products.

Question though. How can you release a character Folio of 4e under the OGL?
I thought the GSL prevented that? Could someone say change the name of certain mechanics from 4e that they like and port them to 3.5 under the OGL?

I'm just taking a guess at it, but I'm betting that since it's just a blank character sheet(s), they're just going to be using the names of various parts of the system, which can't be copyrighted. E.g., they can have the words "Will Defense" followed by a blank space. They're then just releasing that under the OGL.

I think he might've meant hardcovers (ACC and ARC) to join the ranks of the Advanced Bestiary and co. Something I would like to've seen, as well.

Anyway, regarding the GSL decision: Good! :D

The Character Folio we can do because it's really just forms and about all the terms can be sourced from the original SRD and Unearthed Arcana. Game mechanics cannot be copyrighted, so people could take 4E ideas and bring them into 3E if they wanted. They just need to careful to rewrite everything because specific expression is protected by copyright.

Irony

I can't help but feel a certain sense of irony in this situation.

The GSL has been designed to assist WotC not only in protecting their intellectual property but to ensure they have control over any perceived competition. Without the proper controls in place, it's possible that another business entity could capitalize on their unprotected intellectual property and acquire a sustancial market share that they may prefer not to compete with.

So, in the process of trying to over-protect their product, they have encouraged business entities to capitalize on their previous unprotected intellectual property (d20 / OGL). (i.e. Pathfinder)

But then again... maybe its just me that feels that way :)
