[Green Ronin] New Freeport Designer Journal: Beyond Freeport

A new Designer Journal has been posted on the Freeport blog. In this installment Chris Pramas talks about what went into creating the Beyond Freeport section of the Pirate's Guide to Freeport. This optional chapter blows Freeport out into a full campaign setting, detailing the larger world for the first time.

I'm glad of the stress on it being optional. I'll likely steal some ideas from the chapter, but I've already inserted Freeport into Praemal, and I was getting nervous that it was no longer going to fit quite so well after the new book came out.

The slaver-state of Mazin, though, is definitely getting yoinked and added to Uraq in Praemal, though!

I thought Freeport had been placed on the world of Arcanis in some kind of deal between Green Ronin and Paradigm Concepts?

Arcanis has it. So does the Known Realms of Goodman Games. It even shows up in Redhurst.

Freeport fits in all over the place. It doesn't have an exclusive home.

This is true. The idea with Freeport from the beginning was that it could be dropped into the setting of your choice. Over the years some publishers have chosen to add Freeport to their settings as well. The Pirate's Guide to Freeport uses the approach of the earlier books. The only difference is that we're offering a sample campaign setting as an option. We don't expect that everyone will adopt it, but it's there for folks who are looking for a complete setting.

Any word on when the D20 companion book is coming out? I have a group of player characters heading toward Freeport, and the new book looks like it's going to be my primary reference, even though we're going to be doing the trilogy era at first. (I'll be using the City of Adventure book/Denizens as well, as necessary.)

It's scheduled for a Fall release.
