Grim Tales Magic implementation

D20 Modern Magic classes and Grim Tales magic can't really coexist. I dropped the magic advanced classes, and made Grim Tales the only magic available.

Also, if you have access to it, the Black Company game has an excellent magic system that can be used well with any other d20 game; it's based on a skill check like GT, but the effects aren't as dangerous as GT's are.

Henry, any chance you have attempted to integrate BC magic with the rest of GT. If so, care to outline what you did? ;)

I shall have to give the credit on this to HeapThaumaturgist and Old One, two other regular posters here. They both have done this to great effect.

Long story short: The orders of magnitude are advanced talents, the talents are feats, and nonlethal damage is nonlethal damage. I think Student of Wizardry as available at 3rd, 1st Magnitude was at 5th, second magnitude was at 11th, and third magnitude was at 15th or 17th; I don't think they tested it that far. Old One gave non-spellcasters a parity by using the "fewer dead heroes" rule in Grim Tales. He didn't say, but I imagine Dabbler as a first level talent wouldn't be too unbalancing.

Old One also gave a nice twist with "Power Components" - dried zombie claw gave a bonus to fear spells, etc. He also let Savant Talent apply to Use Magic skill, which was quite sweet. :D

If you have search, there are some threads about 6 to 8 months old on the topic by Old One, Yuan-Ti, and Heapthaumaturgist.

Henry,

I asked a similar question on another thread (http://www.enworld.org/showthread.php?t=154007) and was pointed, by Old One, to a thread that seems to answer my questions (http://www.enworld.org/showthread.php?t=122908). Now I just need to get home and read it. :)

Also, Old One mentioned that you might have a spreadsheet for BC spell DCs. If that is true, would you mind sending a copy my way? I would be very appreciative.

BTW, thanks for all the help!!
