grrrr - "unknown" templates in party HELP!!!

Ask the DM for a knowledge check, religious, arcana, undead (if 3.5 this falls under religion).

What is the rest of the current party? I'm not up on cleric as much as wizard spells. From BoEM there is creature loresight which identifies the race of the creature touched, it is a level 1 wizard spell. Similar is object loresight which identifies things about an items last owner. I've used object loresight to determine a necromancer I fought in the past was a vampire.

the party consists of....

cleric of mystra, lg
paladin of helm, lg
cleric of helm, lg (cohort to paladin)
sorceress, ? (template)
monk, ln (template)
rogue/fighter, cg (vampire type)

i'm in a bad spot; it's like a cleric of kelemvor having to accept a willing ghoul as a companion. you know, once i find out...

Well, both the Paladin and his cohort should be strong allies on your side of the conflict. I would not count on the Rogue, however. I would also advise you to ask the DM about making a knowledge check, and consulting with your higher ranked brethern. You are Lawful, so bringing in your organization would be a logical action to take.

actually, the rogue loves me. i'm more willing to be sneaky and use overwhelming force than the paladin.

i don't really want to go spoiling for a fight, although it's pretty much assured at this stage. i would like to find out ahead of some choose-or-lose event, so i can look at possibly reversing the process.

Not really, if someone dies then starts showing a massive power increase (casting more spells, doing lots of damage, etc) I would say that the character would recognize this and that wouldn't be meta gaming.

Yes, and note what I said - "Finding a pattern of odd behavior and investigating is one thing. Looking to prove something specific that the character knows nothing about is another thing entirely."

So, he sees changes in how they act and what they do. He can become suspicious and investigate - asking for knowledge checks, or going to do a little research or asking a sage general questions of what it might be is okay. But trying to find a way to "out" them for something specific is trying to find a way to specifically express player knowledge through the character, which is uncool.

I'm going to put metgaming aside for a moment, and assume that your character has enough evidence to be suspicious enough...

he's a lawful mystran church inquisitor who saw every one of the deaths & resurrections.

Church Inquisitor? As in the the DoF PrC? If so, your first level special ability allows you to essentially Detect Evil at will. I think a surreptitious (or not so) Detect Evil would decide the question quite nicely, eh?

Even if you don't have the PrC, you can still cast the spell.

actually, i was suspicious before the fact that the characters had been "given" templates was ever known. someone dies, stands up and throws a fireball when they couldn't - or wouldn't - do it before is pretty suspect if you ask me.

i did cast detect evil; big whoop, no evil readings. that doesn't mean i have to stop being suspicious.

one player is a good role-player but we've yet to have the game table discussion in earnest (mainly because we've all been travelling and it's not a big rp group). the other player almost never has anything to say.

do i want to out them? reveal them to the world and fire off sound lances into their chests? yes. is that what i am aiming for? no. what i want are some avenues that i might have missed that would allow me to resolve this dilemma in a way that adds to the storyline without conflict in the party.

so, i'm looking for a way to discover what they might be, because i would view it more like a curse than a willing transformation. at the same time, i need to learn about the change to determine if it was, in fact, made by choice. i have every reason to be suspicious; however, i don't care if they are shades (although that's the worst one the dm could have picked) or spellstitched undead faeries with seeming spells - they're still an unknown quantity in the group.

(ahem) Was there a reason you highlighted that description, Mr. Naughty Pervert?

i don't see what is so uncool about wanting to know exactly what happened to two characters that died & came back under an evil altar. perhaps my choice of the term "outing" was poor, but it's also accurate.

am i looking for something specific? you betcha.

i want to know the how, why, what next and what if re: their transformation from mortals to some kind of native outsider that defies all divination attempts to date. maybe they have a mundane suggestion trigger, like in programmed hypnosis. maybe they've made a deal with an extraplanar force that might call in their debts some time in the future.

who knows? but i can tell you i want to...

i could have posted it in pc dialogue but then it might as well be a story hour. that, and my dm, hasn't sent me any notes back yet.

don't look at me - monte cook wrote that module. we tried to do it classic one time and damn near fell out of our seats laughing, what with "gundygoot" and all.

when the dm read the description, we couldn't stop laughing to save our lives. we kept daring the paladin to touch it.
