To me it seems less like a case of "ZOMG, global warming/pollution/whatever is destroying the planet!" human responsibility for the sinkhole but more a matter of humans being stupid enough to build in a bad spot again and not zoning or fortifying or whatever anything properly.
I'm not sure you can fortify against a 200' pit opening suddenly beneath your apartment building.
But building in bad spots, absolutely doable. I remember in University a geolology professor explaining that one of the neighbourhoods in our own city, which is built along the banks of a river, is built on soil that will liquify, spilling all those homes, streets, streetlights, etc. into the river, if we ever get hit with a strong earthquake. And we're right on a fault line...but one that hasn't done much for like 400 years.
That having been said, I didn't purchase a property along the river..
People build in bad places all the time.
With the sinkhole in Guatemala, have they revealed if there were actually people *in* the apartment building when it got sucked down?
