Guatemala Sinkhole

First, according the the CSM, some are already saying the Guatemala Sinkhole was created at least in part to human action.

Well, they're also calling a pipe bursting and hollowing out a cavity through erosion "human action". Water eroding space underground and then receding is the typical natural source of sinkholes. Just in this case it looks like the water source may not have been entirely natural.

Well, given the nature of the supposed substrata of Guatemala there, perhaps they shouldn't have introduced the pipes...or not pipes of that size/construction.

Its similar, in a way, to some of the discussions about who is to blame for the aftermath of Katrina...and buddy, there is enough blame at all levels of gov't on that one to spread around pretty thick. Including levees that were not built up to the Corp of Engineers usual standards, given the kind of land the levees were being built in.

(The Corp, having been embarrassed in New Orleans, has repeatedly been very critical of a plan involving similar levees being built on similar land in the Dallas/FW area to help with a grandiose bridge & park...)

To me it seems less like a case of "ZOMG, global warming/pollution/whatever is destroying the planet!" human responsibility for the sinkhole but more a matter of humans being stupid enough to build in a bad spot again and not zoning or fortifying or whatever anything properly.
