Gust of Wind

First Post
Is there any erratta on Gust of Wind? There isn’t that I’ve seen, but the spell says that it has a chance of affecting creatures. since it doesn’t give a mph value for the gust, its a little hard to adjudicate its affects on creatures via the DMG.

Anyone got any ideas on it? One of my players may soon be finding a ring that allows his arrows to affect the target as per gust of wind, so I wantto make sure we know how to handle it.

I was thinking 5mph (maybe 10mph) per caster level, with a maximum strength of 10 times that amount.

Per the Environment section in the SRD, GoW generates Severe Winds ranging from 31 to 50 mph. Medium creatured are Checked, Small creatures are Knocked Down, and Tiny creatures like unprotectec toad familiars are Blown Away.

Ya, I agree they REALLY should have put that needle-in-a-haystack reference in the spell description.

As it is, don't 'charge' them full price if you're thinking of giving them an item that's anything similar to the Wind Fan.
Really lame semi-expensive items there. :(

I think it could be a useful spell if it were a 'cone'. As written it should be a 2nd level spell, and would be difficult to use outside of dungeon crawls.

There's a Druid spell that creates a wind tunnel, that gives a +4 to hitting with ranged weapons. It's in Magic of Faerun.

Its an item from Relics and Rituals (Ring of Windfury). Its priced at 60,480gp in their erratta, but the party will be finding it, so the price doesn't matter much unless they decide to sell it. I agree with the price though, since when fighting medium creatures (or large flyers) you can prevent them from moving towards you when they are checked.

The spell is only effective in a 10' corridor and for a single round. If the item is based on the spell, it is silly.

A similarly priced item could be throwing down Cloudkills or a Wall of Force or both. That will slow them down, too.

[clowning] But wait, RC!
It can also fan large flames, and push insects around!

That alone is worth 20,000, minimum... [/clowning]

Apparently, the ring allows archers to embed their ammunition with the spell, but it's still so ridiculously overpriced as to be an error in thinking on the parts of Swords & Sorcery Studios.

Now I'm thinking, tho - WHY would a ring's major benefit be to provide a magical effect to bowmen?
Shouldn't it just be a normal enchanted bow that gives the power to the ammo it shoots? (I'd think a bow of Knockback would be a LOT better)
