[Hackmaster] I succumbed

I admit, I gave in to the urge to buy the Player's Handbook and Game Master's Guide for Hackmaster. I know it isn't 3rd edition, compatible with 3rd edition, and more like a 1st edition and 2nd edition hybrid.

But it's full of retro gaming goodness. Is that so wrong?

No! Another one lost to HM...

I hope that this doesn't mean the end of M&M... I am very much looking forward to the finish of this new version...

I think Hackmaster is pretty cool. To be honest, my players don't like it all that much, but it's fun to play every now and then. I know Hackmaster lovers are going to hate me for saying this, but it's great when you just want to play a quick dungeon crawl.

Yes, the system can be used just fine for a regular campaign. Yes, it's suited to more than just hacking and slashing. Yes, I shouldn't put it down by saying I just use it for dungeon crawls and combat adventures...

...but for some reason that seems to be the way my group gets the most enjoyment out of it.

Have no fear, gentle fan! M&M will not disappear.

Terence is editing, and I am writing. In fact, Terence should be turning over the results of his editing soon. Not the entire book mind you, but some chapters.

While I do not play Hackmaster and probably never will, I really want to shove my books in face of certain WotC people and say: "See, that's how a game should be done! Now go into the corner and weep!"

Welcome to the fold!

I've run and played Hackmaster since its release and I've had one of the best times in my long years of gaming. The group I play in has spent the last four months playing through Little Keep on the Borderlands and having a blast doing it!

Good luck with the game!

While I don't run HackMaster, I own all the core books (including the incredible pile of monster supplements) and most of the modules (I love remakes!).

The reason I don't run it is that I am running 3e as a d20 developer and designer.

Honestly, if I was still running CyberPunk 2020 and Vampire regularly to get my role-playing fix, I would also be running Hackmaster instead of D&D3e as my D&D type game, as I love dungeoncrawls and this is THE system for that.

But, since I am running nearly EVERY style of game in my D&D gmes, I'm sticking to d20 with the more adaptable skill and feat system.

It's amazing ... I picked up these books on an impulse, and yet when I read through them, I get a feeling of excitement I haven't felt since third edition came out. I don't know how to describe it, but it just feels so right as a game.

However, I can't shake the feeling I bought the PHB and DMG for 1e all over again :( I'm hoping this game has enough of it's own merits to stand alone and not just be a 1e/2e clone.
