Harry Potter question

Anybody here know anything about the REAL British Public School system? Do they still do houses and things like that? If so, I assume JKR would have used that for inspiration.

I didn't go to a Public school just a 'bog standard' comprehensive but we still had Houses, Prefects and Head Boys/Girls. That was a number of years ago though  . My son has just started at comprehensive and they don't have Houses but do have Prefects and Head Boy/Girl.

This is going to bug me and I don't have time to re-read OotP.

We find out in the end that Dumbledor passed on Harry being a prefect because Harry already had a lot going on. But why would he make Malfoy a prefect of Sytherin? IIRC, Draco isn't the best student and unless the rest of his house was significantly worse there would be a ton of reasons to give the prefectship to someone who hated Potter less.
IIRC, Draco's actually a pretty good student. I suspect half the reason why he's a prefect is to try and get him to look up to Snape, rather than his father.
