Has FR "jumped the shark"?

As for BoVD, it fits right in with the Splat Books, feeding the thought that "My PC needs to be more powerful, I need more Books so I can get stronger Feats and Spells!" what inherently does it have to do with FR? Im ashamed to admit it , but very, very little. Althought it stands as a great example of SJ'ing.

When one takes into consideration that the Book of Vile Darkness is not a Forgotten Realms product, its lack of Realms-specificity becomes less surprising ;)

I think the novels jumped the shark.

I think 2e game materials get closer to it as you get closer to shadowdale and waterdeep.

3e FR game materials are no where near it.

Campaign worlds need lovin' too, you know. Especially the out of print ones.

(Tune in next week, as Alustriel whispers sweet nothings into Birthright's ear.)

And while I'm here, a slightly more serious response.

Campaign worlds can't "jump the shark" in the same sense as a TV series can, because the world itself isn't an ongoing story, it's a place where stories happen. Campaign worlds often have metaplots, however, and these plots can and do jump over large aquatic predators with disturbing frequency.

The Greyhawk metaplot, for instance, jumped the shark with the series of Vecna related modules, in particular the one that starts with the Circle of Eight being offed by V. (The implication here, of course, is that the PC's should care about the Circle of Eight - "Oh no! Mordenkainen's dead! How will Oerth survive?" instead of "Huh. Some high level wizard dude just died. More treasure for us, I guess.")

Funny

This is a very funny post. You guys could all be comedy writers. I wonder if that's a common theme among gamers, especially those that end up DM'ing.

Metaplots that jump:
* Avatar Trilogy
* Manshoon Clones
* Elminster "trapped" in Hell
* Elminster as a chick
* Elminster doin' it with his Diety

Guess I wouldn't argue with that list.

d00d, that's when Greyhawk, Ravenloft, and Planescape jumped the shark. The Vecna modules were just bad, bad plot all over.

If an Elminster falls in the forest...

A theory I'm developing from this thread is the players are actually much more conservative and fond of evil characters than good ones.

I mean if the circle of eight goes down then we either think its dramatic or non-essential. But Vecna going out, or nearly going out and killing another beloved villain, is a real pain

If Elminister snuffed it in some really spectacular way, I have the feeling the message thread would be something like:

"In what spectacular way would you have prefferred Elminster to have been snuffed?"

But when Bane dies we both miss the guy and get annoyed about how he left.

Eh...with a corpse, it's "vile", but with a campaign setting, it's "epic". Next he'll be bonking deities or something, I'll bet.

*me wonders if there's some sort of equivalent to the Mile High Club that Elminster could now join*
