Has it finally happened - gaming on line??

My main concern - no matter how good it is, you still have to convince a group of people to buy one in order to get any use out of the product. It's like a videophone - sure, it's cool, but you still have to have a buddy with one to use it. And if you only have one buddy with one, it's not all that useful.

It's great that they have a 'lite' version...but will someone pay $20 for something they can't use unless someone with the full version is around?

My main concern with this kind of thing is feature-creep; once I've got my audio connection to the players and some kind of shared miniatures board, I've got everything I need. Typically, there's better programs for chat windows, or instant messaging, that aren't built in - that suits me fine as well.

The only thing that could get me to buy it in place of ScreenMonkey Lite (which is free, thankfully) is if it had really excellent fast-mapping software. But really, I'd rather just have that than a program that is trying to be everything at once.

I'm not too concerned with finding a group, as I already have one using WebRPG. Any of you guys trying out this now program: have you used WebRPG/OpenRPG before and, if so, how does it compare?

We rotate DMing, so I will have to convince 2 of the other guys to pay the full price. I wonder if you can buy the lite to start with and then pay to upgrade. That way we could try it with one of us as DM and if we still like it the next DM can pay for the upgrade.

Very interested in seeing the demo.

Without having tried either WebRPG/OpenRPG or ScreenMonkey one thing that clearly stands out when comparing them to Fantasy Grounds (which I haven't tried either) is presentation.
None of the first three holds a candle to Fantasy Grounds graphics wise.
Whether they all have the same features I can't say, but what I've seen so far from Fantasy Grounds looks great.
I'm eagerly awaiting the demo version to arrive... I pointed the site out to one of my friends and now he's practically drooling to get his hands on it too.

What I hope someone is going to do too is make custom XML "builds" so you can import e.g. Eberron races to the program (if that's allowed...???).

According to the developers on the forums, it is perfectly fine. They are even going to have a section of the site up next week that will act as a storehouse for player/GM mods... ;)

Oh, I read that on their forums too, I was more thinking whether you were allowed to make e.g. Eberron races, classes etc. and distribute those.

You could probably distrubute them within your own group but unless its OGL you I doubt they would be able to distrubute stuff via some central point link their website.
