Has the horse left the barn?

With the 2010 releases of PHB3 and its "hybrid" multi-classed characters and the new "basic" beginners rules. Would you be willing to try it again? Have you already made your mind up about 4e?

Clearly this is a question for those that were turned off or disappointed by 4e.

Yep, its too late - I'm a Savage now! I seem to like the odd-numbered editions anyway (1st, 3rd, looking forward to 5th - hated 2e, not all that excited by 4e).

I play systems that "grab me". I give them 3 full sessions to do so. I gave 4E far more than that. 4 Game Days and 3 modules worth of game sessions. It never "grabbed me", so I have moved on and won't be coming back unless I have no better option.

So I am in no way saying the system sucks, in fact I thought it was pretty good, I am just simply saying it never grabbed me, so I doubt I'll ever play it again.

The horse has left the barn, the ship has sailed, etc.

While the multiclassing rules were a sore spot for me, they were only one of many.

Even if I were enticed by this announcement to give it another go, most of the guys in my group had their own complaints about the game that I don't think would be addressed in a supplement. A wholesale revision to certain aspects of 4Ed would be required.

For instance, several of the guys in my group are hardcore computer gamers. While they didn't single out any one game, to a man they rejected "marking" as too much like the games they played on their PCs. (And no, they don't frequent boards like this one- they were surprised to find out about the existence of games like Pathfinder, True 20 & Mutants & Masterminds when they rejected 4Ed but still wanted to try an in-print RPG.)

FWIW, I don't play any of the CRPGs, so my "computer gamey" gripe was that the Healing Surges reminded me too much of games like Mortal Kombat or Tekken- games I love but in no way wanted to play at the gaming table.

My final verdict on 4Ed was that it was a good game I'd play (if asked), but I'll never run it.

So, for me, 4Ed is just another FRPG- a well done one, to be sure- but it's not my flavor of D&D, and never will be.

I tried 4e. It just didn't click. Maybe this was the DM, maybe it was the system changes. I don't know and I don't care. It just was never fun and most people (twenty, twenty-two or so out of twenty-four) in my gaming group weren't interested in or impressed by it.

Besides, I found the game I want to play and run in Fantasy Craft.

Me not playing 4e goes way beyond there being new 4e crunch/fluff available. I just don't care for the system as much as I care about 3.5.

I've played several 4e games and had fun playing each time. But I mostly DM, and I have too many resources and spent too much time fine tuning my resources for a 3.5 campaign for me to not play 3.5 D&D.

As a player, I prefer playing a 3.5 PC much more than I do a 4e PC. 4e is fun to play, but the PCs are very bland to me & I can't wrap my head around "why" a PC can do what he can do in 4e. I can just connect better with a 3.5 PC. I can almost make the exact kind of adventurer I'd want to play with the 3.5 rules. I can't say the same with the 4e rules no matter how many sourcebooks they make.

I'd be all for playing in a casual 4e game, but I don't think I'd want to play it weekly or DM it. I have nothing against 4e per se, but its not the kinda game I could get stoked for week after week...

They say never say never, so instead, I'll say I probably wont play 4E until I try to write something for a 3rd party publisher.

I am almost done with the player's book for my own system (on page 311!), so, No, I don't see myself turning to 4e. Actually, I don't even see myself playing 4e on a casual basis with someone else running......unless I already knew that person to be a DM so good that no chance should be missed, regardless of system.

5e? We'll see, but I imagine I'll just be converting what I like.
