Hasbro cuts 125 jobs, most in Rhode Island
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Hasbro Inc. has laid off about 125 workers, mostly in Rhode Island, as the nation’s No. 2 toy maker concentrates on new toy technologies.
The cuts in the toys, games, international and corporate divisions will give the company more flexibility in developing new products, Hasbro spokesman Wayne Charness said on Wednesday.
About 90 people lost their jobs in Rhode Island, where the company is based.
Hasbro employed 6,900 people worldwide as of the end of 2003. The cuts come after years of restructuring at the company.
Both the toy industry and toy stores are struggling as children abandon traditional toys and games at an earlier age and video games bite into sales of dolls, trucks and other mainstays. Sales of traditional toys have fallen for three straight years.
Hasbro and industry leader Mattel Inc., of El Segundo, Calif., both posted lackluster third-quarter results this year, and executives at both companies warned investors that the crucial holiday shopping season could be weak — blaming higher fuel costs and shaky consumer confidence.
Charness declined Wednesday to discuss sales during the current quarter.
Hasbro shares slipped 6 cents, or 0.3 percent, to close at $18.25 on the New York Stock Exchange — near the low end of their 52-week trading range of $16.90 to $23.33.

OMG! Those poor RPG game designers in Rhode Island.

Wait a minute. WotC is based in Seattle. Silly me.

Nonetheless, my sympathy goes out to them during this holiday season.

As for blaming their lackluster sales on higher fuel cost and shaky consumer confidence, pish-posh!

I suspect that was actually "oil costs," and got lost in translation.

Oil is a significant component in plastic, and plastic is a significant component of most Hasbro toys.

And yes, that makes a difference, when the world's largest retailer is squeezing you for ever lower prices...

Oh, that is just great!

Any more reason why we can't wean off oil? Don't mean to border this on politics.

Actually it could very well be "fuel." Shipping costs are affected by fuel costs.

Layoffs always stink, but this is an especially Scrooge-like time to announce them.

Lots of companies do layoffs around Christmas; some before (Hasbro's done it before), some after (that's when I was laid off). Somewhere, I read an explanation of why, but I can't remember it.

To crush the hopes of mere mortals, of course. Everyone knows that. Its the only way to maintain domination. One must be ruthless! ;)

I just read a Scripps Howard news story that says that Hasbro cited the trend of kids wanting more techno-gadgets and less toys. Hasbro unfortunately relies on sales of traditional toys such as action figures, not GameBoy-like devices. I take it to mean that they cut some of their toy designers.

This is true in general-- though I am sure Wizards is doing well with miniatures, board games, ccgs and rpgs, they'd still just be doing well in a niche market. Video games are over $1B a year.

Fuel costs are of course an issue, I just wanted to point out it goes a bit beyond transportation costs.

As for the timing, yep-- it's all to do with the timing of the fiscal year.
