Having trouble with Online RPG

Ok, heres the beef.

I've spent the last 3 hours looking online to see if I can somehow find a place on the net where you can play DnD online with other people.

I've come up with nothing. And Play by Post is the dumbest thing I've ever seen.

Has no one come up with a way to play DnD over a chat program? So that its just like playing in real life, but on the net? Like...even just talking?

I would love to see some RPG thing online where you can group with people, and get a DM with a capaign, and meet online certain days and play in a chat room like you would in real life.

Any help? :(

Find a friendly DM and get them to run a game via Instant Messenger. I find this works very well, especially for solo play and small groups.

You could always try Neverwinter Nights. I played in a campaign of sorts (3 hours, once/week) for a few months last year. It is not great, but perhaps better than nothing.

Windows Messenger is the best way to do it with widely available technology. It's got great plugin support if somone wants to write a dice roller (there's probably already one out there, I haven't looked). It's also got Whiteboard for collaborative drawings, great for tactical stuff or a grid.

A custom solution might be a bit better. It would be pretty easy to whip one up supporting secret chats, equipment lists, etc. along with a decent grid combat system. You might want to check out sourceforge.net and see if they have something decent. I'm sure someone on there has done something like this.

What types of "features" are you looking for, exactly?

Try Skype. You can download it for free at Skype.com. Its a voice chat program. We use this for those few times when everyone is on break except one player, who's in Georgia, and it is usually clearer than using the phone.

The real trouble is finding the people; its easy to get a program. Right now I get to play once every few months or so, but if you know gamers who want to play online, you'll have no problem with Skype or any instant messenger program.

Im basically looking for a site where people can meet up, and get a campaign started. Or one that has started, and it looking for new players.

But they play over a chat program.
