Healers Kit and belladonna

One of the characters in our adventure has been inflicted with lycanthropy from a wereboar. The issue is wheather or not belladonna would be available in a healers kit. It states that it must be fresh and picked within the last week, so I pretty certain that I am not going to give in to my players, but I wanted to know how the rest of you would handle this situation.

The interesting part to this is that the character is a monk and his alignment will changeing to neutral causing him to become an ex-monk. I am pretty sure that I will be that I will making the remove curse option availble to him after a small quest, becuase he is pretty tied to his character being a monk and I don't want to ruin his character for him. But in the mean time, I think that I'll have a little fun.

I say that it shouldn't be available. I think you should make the pc sweat it out a bit worrying about whether his character's monk abilities will be impacted. I like your idea of sending him on alittle quest to gain the remove curse. I think your thoughts show good judgement.

Beladona in the kit, sure. less than 7 days old... no. Of course determining the exact age would take a divintation spell, while a decent knowlede nature check would give a very rough guess.

While the character does have a healers kit, it was purchased sometime ago, and there has been no indication by the player that he was restocking. But the weazily players say that if they had the Belladona in the kit then they would naturally refresh it given the opportunity (when in town). Of course this is a different question. What I am really getting at is wheather the Belladona would even be part of the kit. If it's not then no argument from the whiners.

I'd say that belladonna would not be part of a standard healing kit, which is basically bandages and the like. Belladonna would have to be bought at a herbalist's, and in some areas might not be available.

They'd better go find some now. :)

Finding fresh belladonna probably wouldn't be very hard, in any temperate climate. If your party includes, or can hire, anyone with Knowledge (nature), they can probably walk out into the woods and find some with little trouble.

IRL the stuff grows wild in most parts of Europe and the USA. Like most poisonous plants, it's very conspicuous if you know what to look for.

It might be. Though deadly in large doses, it does have medicinal properties. A compound of belladonna, hemlock, and other herbs may have been applied to the skin as an medieval anaesthetic. However, this wouldn't require the stuff to be fresh; one presumes the leaves in a medical kit would come dried, to prevent them from rotting.

Given that I would be willing to give in the argument that if the player had written down that his character had Belladona that I would assume that it was fresh as long as there was a person with herbalist skills around. But back to my question, is Belladona standard stuff for a healers kit?
