heavy thrown

I want to build a melee ranger. I was thinking it would make sense to use a battleaxe/handaxe combo so that he could throw his offhand if he couldn't make a melee attack. It would also allow him to use ranged weapon powers with the throwing axes.

The big problem I'm having is that all of the ranger powers use dex instead of str for ranged attacks, which defeats the purpose of using a heavy thrown weapon.

Aare we just not supposed to use heavy thrown weapons for rangers? That seems awfully limiting.

You know, the fact that they let you use throwing weapons in TWF attacks seems to be pretty opposite-of-limiting to me.

But it never hurts to ask your DM.

You can use heavy thrown weapons, you just dont use STR when using ranger powers. It doesnt make much sense for a ranger using Nimble Strike to be using STR. As a matter of fact it would probably be best to use heavy thrown weapons since they have a higher damage die.

I think you may be misunderstanding me. There are some powers that are meant for ranged or melee attacks, and others that are ranged only or melee only. In all cases where you can use a ranged weapon they use dex for the attack, which makes heavy thrown weapons sort of pointless.

As for asking the DM, more often than not that's me. I'm mainly trying to make sense of the rules so that I can make reasonable rulings.

The purpose of Heavy Thrown weapons isn't to give the Ranger even more ranged attacks, but to give the Fighter, Paladin and Warlord some limited ranged attacks without having to rely on DEX.

Square hole, round peg, something something.

I'm not sure I understand. A heavy thrown weapon normally uses Str for hit & dmg. When used with a ranger power as a ranged weapon, it will use Dex for hit & dmg instead. What's the problem?

As a TWF his main stat will be STR, and therefor he wont be getting as much bang for his buck because the powers use dex.

If you really want to focus on Two-Weapon Fighting but have some very limited ranged ability, simply select powers as if you weren't considering ranged combat. You don't HAVE to use a power, and can choose instead to throw your handaxe as a Ranged Basic Attack, which will use your Strength since you were using a Heavy Thrown weapon.

When doing this, simply remember to carry at least one extra handaxe until you get a magic one (I simply LOVE all magic thrown weapons auto-returning).
