Does a heavy weapons (as described in Magic of Faerun) one size category larger than the wielder require an exotic weapon proficiency to use? A player of mine says it does not, but I find it hard to believe that something that increases his damage potential that much could be had for the price of making the weapon heavy alone.

Assuming the PC is not "large," then making a weapon a size larger would certainly need an exotic weapon proficiency. "Exotic" in 3e really is just used to mean unusual or different from the usual weapons.

If the PC is large, I'd rule differently - there's nothing wrong with allowing a large creature to use a scaled up longsword as a martial weapon.

And finally, I think ALL heavy weapons require an exotic weapon proficiency, don't they? In this case, you'd need one exotic weapon proficiency for a heavy longsword and/or one for the scaled-up heavy longsword. You'd only need two exotic weapon proficiencies if you intended to use more than one version of the weapon, that is, each of

Heavy Longsword
Scaled-up Longsword
Heavy Scaled-up Longsword

require an exotic weapon proficiency.

I believe that you do not need the ewp if the weapon is one size smaller than you and used 2 handed. Just checked maof (page 179) and this is correct.

Or alternatively this is what I am currently looking at for a half dragon fighter.

Two Weapon Fighting
Oversize Two Weapon Fighting (Complete Adventurer)
- When wielding a one-handed weapon in your off hand you treat it as light
Exotic Weapon Proficiency - Warmace

Stongarm Bracers (Magic Item Compendium) (6000 gp)
- Wield weapons as if you were one size larger

Large Warmace - 3d6 damage, -1 Ac for it being unwieldy.

So with this you can wield two Large Warmaces with only a -2 penalty on each attack (TWF and off hand light), you get a -2 ac penalty but Improved Buckler Shield and a +1 buckler cancels that out.

Mighy Wallop (spell from Races of the Dragon)
- Sor / Wiz level 1
- Weapons treated one size larger for damage.
- (I think a command word Ring of this would cost 1800gp, according to PCGen).

Either way I think the Strongarm Bracers are a better choice than Monkey Grip.

Did you notice the previous posts' dates? There were no strongarm bracers in 2002. ;)

(9 days short of being 8 years old -- your thread necromancy powers are strong!)
