Hellcat Hell.

Our party ran into a 3.0 Hellcat (DR 20/+2) the other day and we didn't have any +2 weapons or GMW spells.

The Hellcat got a Hold on the Gnome cleric and started raking every round. We couldn't get past the DR so we did the only thing we could thing of. We grappled the cat.

Now, how would you run that? We did a touch attack to initiate the grapple. No touch attack since the Hellcat was grappling. Then we did an opposed grapple check to hold the Hellcat. Then we proceeded to attempt to pin the Hellcat to pull him off the poor Gnome cleric.

Now since a Hellcat gets three attack normally, does that mean it would get three grapple checks to break free from the Pin?

How would this play out?

thanks,
Ysgarran.

My group ran into a similar problem once with two kytons... who had incidentally dropped some chains before they engaged us.

But in this case:
SRD grappling section:
Attack Your Opponent:
You can make an attack with an unarmed strike, natural weapon, or light weapon against another character you are grappling. You take a –4 penalty on such attacks.
You can’t attack with two weapons while grappling, even if both are light weapons.
E.g. the hellcat has one attack with her BAB due to grappling... plus the additional rake attacks IIRC. If she wants to attack with all her natural weapons, she has to take the penalty for attacking with natural weapons.

Edit:
Hellcat section: SRD 3.5... same stuff in 3.0
Improved Grab (Ex): To use this ability, a hellcat must hit with its bite attack. It can then attempt to start a grapple as a free action without provoking an attack of opportunity. If it wins the grapple check, it establishes a hold and can rake.
Pounce (Ex): If a hellcat charges, it can make a full attack, including two rake attacks.
Rake (Ex): Attack bonus +13 melee, damage 1d8+3.
Uhm... I was partially wrong and not clear. To get out of the grapple, the hellcat only has one attack due to BAB. During the grapple: Trying to establish a hold with her bite attack, then rake attacks.

Hellcats are really dangerous if you pounce from enemy to enemy (in 3.5 though) :D
