I really don't like the rule of helmets making immune to crits.

I doubt anyone was proposing immunity. Something like 5% or 10% fortification, perhaps.

I don't think they actualy protected you from sneak attacks in the CPRGs just crits. Of course by the rules this should have translated into sneak attack protection as well, but it didn't.

actually in baldurs gate it was Backstab...i remember yoshimo stabbing this bbeg and getting a crit at the same time

Sneak attacks didn't appear in baldur's gate (2e), but they did appear in Icewind Dale 2, which also had anti-crit helms I believe.
