Whatever works for you.
So long as teh DM understands your methods, it's fine.

Me, I have a build plan on a spreadsheet, with powers and equipment on cards.
I keep track of life total, surges, APs, death saves failed, etc. with dice.

Writing and erasing just seems so plebeian.

cool i played yesterday as a dm with new players and they where wondering how they would put new things on it and i just told them to erase it.

It's important to use blue ink for hit points and black ink for characteristics. Feats must be in ALL CAPITAL LETTERS and powers should be underlined. Also, you must have a registered WotC Judge approve each change; mail your character sheet in to them every time you level up.

[/snark] do it any way you want, as long as it makes sense to the player and the GM

Use Character Builder

With 4e and the advent of the Character Builder, I have opted to use the Character Builder (and pay the fee) for all my characters.

This has (very) minor drawbacks, but works pretty well and I don't buy very many rule books like I did in previous editions.

okay thx i use redblade to create my characters but thx for the help i already knew pretty much to do just i wanted to make sure i was doing it right
