Help for Gnome Wizard

The Proconsul

First Post
I'm creating a Gnome Wizard (Enchanter), and was wondering what sort of hints as to what spells, PrCs & feats to take (I have T&B and MoF). The (adjusted) stats I rolled are as follows (as per the rules of our campaign, i can't change the order):

Str 9
Dex 13
Con 15
Int 16
Wis 10
Cha 12

Well, the first two feats I'd take, in order, would be Spellcasting Prodigy and Spell Focus: Enchantment, up those will saves.

Third level, maybe take Heighten Spell. There are no good 2nd enchantment spells (at least, not in the PHB or either book you mentioned above), might as well memorize a 2nd level charm person as your bonus spell, gets the DC up more.

Fifth, how about craft wand, combined with heightened spell gets you a wand of level 3 charm person spells.

Skills, I'd hit the persuasive skills like bluff and diplomacy, the character would be more of a manipulator than an offensive mage. Lose Evocation as your banned school, you'll want stuff like Divination and Illusion to enhance your control over people.

Feats:

spell focus enchantment
greater spell focus enchantment
spell casting prodigy
heighten spell (particularly important for enchantment spells as there are very few of them)
chain spell
quicken spell
leadership

PrC:

Mindbender seems an obvious choice
Perhaps Candlecaster
Perhaps Mage of the Arcane Order
Perhaps Brewmaster
Perhaps Spelldancer
Perhaps Loremaster

Blood Mage from T&B is also a really intriguing PrC, you end up getting a few feats out of it for free and some other cool abilities. I did not see Spell Penetration or Greater spell penetration listed, and these become very useful at higher levels. If you can get you hands on the FRCS, check out the Archmage. Makes for some very interesting flexibility later on, and in some very interestinmg ways, helps prepare you for Epic levels if your campaign is going to those dizzy heights.

Well, if you have access to other Forgotten Realm material (the sourcebook) you can think about making a shadow enchanter. Of course your patron diety would be Shar and your alignment would be N, LE, CE, or NE.

In MoF, Spell Thematics is an interesting feat, it can add a lot of character to a spellcaster by giving them a theme to work off of.

Also in MoF is the gnome artificer, which has always looked like a fun prc. You need to take some rogue levels at some point though...

Spell Focus - Enchanter is sort of a no-brainer :)

You could go for a more passive route, a counterspeller, since you have MoF you can pick up the appropriate feats.

Its hard to know how to help without hearing more about your character. Do you have any concept in your head of what kind of gnome you are going to be? Also, have you picked a region (and regional items) yet? Exotic Weapon Prof - Pistols could be an interesting choice for a 1st level wizard...

Go to RPGnow and buy Joe's Book of Enchantment! I DM an enchanter and he swears by that book.

Massively useful for an enchanter. Good spells (some too good, your DM will have to check some things), good PrCs, some interesting feats and items, and some good advice.

The most interesting advice is to ditch Illusions. The rational: if they aren't affected by your enchantments, they won't be effected by your illusions either. In any case, enchantment and evocation are on different tiers, so don't ditch evocation unless you have a VERY good reason.

As a gnome, he'll only get 1 feat at 1st level.

By one point... I'd say you're better off with a +1 level metamagic feat, like silent spell or extend spell. Extend is a good choice for enchanters.
